All about Pet Passports

Published 11/1/2007
This scheme allows animals – primarily cats and dogs to have similar freedom of travel to many parts of the world. For a current list please visit: www.defra.gov.uk

The process to obtain a Pet Passport is very straightforward:

  • The Animal must be over 8 weeks of age
  • The Animal must be microchipped - this can be done on the day of vaccination but must be before vaccination.
  • Rabies Vaccination is given
  • A blood sample must be taken 3 weeks later and sent to an approved laboratory for analysis.
  • This blood sample must give a valid result.

  • A passport is issued which allows re-entry into the UK without going through the usual quarantine procedures. It becomes valid from 6 months of the date of the blood sample. A period of 3 weeks must elapse between the rabies vaccination and the animal being taken out of the country.
